5 Minutes With Miss Anja Gensel

Julie: Tell us a bit about you

Anja: I am a political activist in Anchorage, Alaska, effecting real change through my non-profit TG Advocacy organization called “TransAKtion!. I also produce and host a TG themed talkshow podcast called “Good Morning, TransAmerica!” which .tackles hot-button issues such as transpeople and Christianity, Transitioning in the Workplace, and The impact of transitioning on our partners and families. We travel the world from Australia to Kazakhstan to examine the quality and culture of life for the transpeople who live there. We have world-class guests such as Dr Doug Osterhaut, Dr. Toby Meltzer, and Dr Joel Beck, and many more to come. The show is available from iTunes or our website.

Julie: What has been the biggest challenge for you so far?

Anja: The gatekeeping behaviour of many of the politicians here in Alaska, and a particular televangelist named Jerry Prevo, who likes to use the public’s uninformed fear of transpeople as a weapon to bring down attempts to extend civil rights to GLBT Alaskans. Also, our general lack of civil rights here, across the USA.

Julie: If you had to start over again, what would you do differently?

Anja: Move to Norway or Australia, where I would already have the same civil rights as every other citizen, and not got involved in the seemingly endless uphill battle for even the basics here in the USA!

Julie: Who do you admire and why?

Anja: Phyllis Frye and Roberta Perkins. Phyllis is a gender warrior who takes the fight all the way to the halls of congress. And she has done so since the 1970s, and we are all better for it. She has been my role model since I was a teenager. Through Roberta Perkins’ efforts, the lives of thousands of Australian transpeople have been changed for the better. She founded the New South Wales Gender Centre, and brought the government’s attention to problems that sex workers face. This amazing woman has likely saved thousands of lives! How Amazing is that?!?

Julie: It takes courage and determination to step out, what tips can you share and what is your motivator?

Anja: We are blessed with one life that is tragically short. Far too short to spend it being someone that you are not. And yes, you will lose SOME friends-but you WILL make new ones who love you for who you are!

Julie: What are your 3 biggest success tips?

Anja:

1. Don’t attack or lash out at the uninformed. Educate them, and dazzle them with excellence!
2. Know your political leaders, and exactly what they stand for, Vote and participate actively in your government!
3. Always try to be a positive force in people’s lives. It comes back three-fold!

5 Minutes With Vanessa Sheridan

This week I have the pleasure of introducing you a wonderful role model with in the trans community, Vanessa Sheridan.

Vanessa is an expert business consultant, speaker, trainer, and executive coach. Vanessa’s focus is to raise awareness within the business community. She has learned that social change often happens first in the workplace.  Her website is www.vanessasheridan.com.

Julie: Tell us a bit about you?

Vanessa: I’m a U.S.-based transgender business consultant, speaker, corporate trainer, and executive coach. (However, I’d be delighted to work internationally if there’s a legitimate opportunity.) I’m also the author of several books on transgender-related topics and have twice been a finalist for Lambda Literary Awards. My latest book is “The Complete Guide to Transgender in the Workplace,” and it’s the first full-length, hardcover volume on this topic ever to be released by a mainstream publisher. I’m proud and humbled by that fact. I hope the book helps many, many people.

Julie: What has been the biggest challenge for you so far?

Vanessa: Raising awareness about transgender issues throughout the business community and the larger society. It’s critical to let the public know that, while our lesbian and gay siblings deserve support and affirmation, transgender people have their own distinct concerns apart from the gay and lesbian communities. We need and deserve equal rights (not special rights) just like every other citizen.

Julie: If you had to start over again, what would you do differently?

Vanessa: I’d come out earlier and be bolder. But then, I’ve always been a slow learner and devout coward.

Julie: Who do you admire and why?

Vanessa: I admire anyone who is true to themselves and chooses to take pride in being who and what they are. Transgender people have a long, storied history that deserves respect, and I admire those who put themselves on the line for the sake of truth and honesty.

Julie: It takes courage and determination to step out, what tips can you share and what is your motivator?

Vanessa: Be aware, informed, and responsible. You owe it to yourself to know what’s going on in the world and to work for justice. Always be considerate, kind, and loving. Choose to be positive and optimistic. The world is full of people who will tell you that you can’t be successful, but you should refuse to listen to them. Be passionate, be involved, and be smart about it. When you fall down, keep getting up. You may or may not reach your goal, but you’re never going to reach it if you don’t keep on trying.

Julie: What are your 3 biggest success tips?

Vanessa:

1. Find your courage and step out. You can do this if you really want to.
2. Believe in yourself, and never stop. You are worthy.
3. “Illegitimi non carborundum.” (Don’t let the bastards grind you down.)

Please forgive me for not sending a more personal note to all of you, but I am sending this email out in desperation.

As most of you know, I am a transgender woman in the midst of a very difficult divorce situation. In short, my ex-spouse, her attorney, and the Church are on a mission to remove me from my role as a parent. I learned today, they will stop at nothing to do so. Kentucky is a very conservative state, with very few cases that deal with transgender people and their rights.

With that said, I am in the fight of my life. We adopted these two precious girls from China, and they mean the world to me. My oldest is nine, and my youngest is seven. I spent countless hours under crawl spaces repairing old homes, remodeling interiors, selling properties, and working a tremendous amount of overtime just so that we could adopt them.

Now, because of my diagnosis, the Holy rollers want me out of my children’s lives. I did not transition on my own. Like many of you, I sought out some very highly skilled professionals in the medical field to understand what I have and how to treat it. This decision was not made lightly nor was it done overnight. I recognized this was a huge risk, however, I had no choice.

With that said, if you are transgendered, and have transitioned with children, or know of someone who has, I would like to hear your story. I suppose you have been wondering where I have been hiding? This year has just flown by for me and I am sure it is the same for you. Firstly I would like to welcome you to our new format of T-Girls Tips. The start of this year has been incredibly busy for me both personally and professionally. My life has been an amazing journey and I am so often asked “How did I come to do, what I do?” Well, I thought today maybe a good time to tell my story. It is reasonably rare that you have a profession as a “femininity coach”. Where did it all start?

Where Did It All Start

It all started several years ago when I started to research the TG community sometime after that I completed a diploma in Colour and Style. I have always had a passion for helping others and I decided that the TG community could use my skills and services by this time I had already been working with several TG women. I found this to be so rewarding and found my niche, I feel very passionate and purposeful about what I could offer these women. It has been a lifelong mission for me to help women see their value. This need is amplified within the TG community.

Becoming The Femininity Coach

I also knew that I could take advantage of the qualifications I had gained as a results coach and NLP practitioner along with my 27 years in the cosmetic industry. It seemed I had the perfect mix to become a “Femininity Coach” my passion grows on a daily basis and I have been so blessed by the wonderful women who have come in to my life to support both personally and professionally.

5,000 TG Women At Our FaceBook Fan Page

When we started “The Femininity Coach” we had nine TG women in our data base, today we are nudging 1,000 we have a FaceBook Fan Page that has reached almost 5,000. I am often overwhelmed by the emails that I receive and feel honoured to be part of your journey. Having worked with so many girls both through the internet and face to face I believe I have an understanding that very few genetic women will ever have and through this understanding I can facilitate the transformations required for my clients to become a “natural looking women”.

Amazing Transgender Children

Recently there has been so much awareness around the TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY and many documentary shows highlighting the challenges that TG women face. 5 Minutes With Miss Bri’Anna Francissica Webster

Julie: Tell us about Bri’Anna

Bri’Anna: Where to begin:

My name is Bri’Anna Francissica Webster and I am a preoperative male to female transgender who started her journey on May 6th, 2006. My name was officially changed on May 8th, 2008 and I started Gender Therapy on June 18th, 2008. I have been having many problems and frustrations on finding adequate employment as a full time transgendered Lady. I did market research for about 3 years and finally decided to open up a High Fashion Clothing Boutique that carries everything from wigs, makeup, perfumes, hoisery, furs, jewelry, and high fashion designer items such as Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo.

I am 38 years old and the main reason for me opening an online clothing boutique is due to there are not that many stores that specialize in high fashion clothing and accessories for the alternative lifestyle and trying to find heels, boots, and shoes in larger sizes are very rare to find. Also since I was not able to find adequate employment to save money for my SRS (sexual reassignment surgery). I needed to do something to help raise money for my SRS and have a future income.

Julie: What has been the biggest challenge for you so far?

Bri’Anna: My biggest challenge was dealing with my gender issues and finding adequate employment to pay for my sexual reassignment surgery.

Julie: If you had to start over again, what would you do differently?

Bri’Anna: If I had to start all over again I would make sure that I received the proper medical help with my gender identity and prepare myself for having my SRS at the age of 16.

Julie: Who do you admire and why?

Bri’Anna: I admire people that are open minded without regards to sexual orientation as well as those who support someone who are going through the transition of male to female and or female to male that are willing to help those that need emotional support, mental support as well as being treated and respected as they should.

Julie: It takes courage and determination to step out, what tips can you share and what is your motivator?

Bri’Anna: It does take a lot of courage to step out for it is not an easy journey to go through. The tips that I can give to anyone would be

1. talk with a Gender Therapist about gender identity
2. start doing research on Transgenderism and really take heed to what is expected
3. contact a primary physician for HRT as well as consult with an SRS Surgeon. An SRS Surgeon can tell you how to get started on your transitional journey.

Julie: What are your 3 biggest success tips?

Bri’Anna: My three biggest successes are as follows:

1. 3 time published poet,
2. growing up in a professional business family, and
3. having an open mind and not giving up on your dreams.

Best holiday: My Best Holiday would be New Years Day. Why is this my favorite holiday? It is due to a new year is beginning and there is nothing better than starting a new year to learn new things in life.

Your long term goal: Now that I am no longer working in the company due to the owner passing away in 2004. With all my training and expertise I am now running and operating my own online high fashion boutique for the Alternative Community. I just opened up the boutique on January 1st, 2010 with the hopes of having a physical store opened up in 2011.

Our goal is to have at least one store in each state along with a transgender community and resource center that is a long term goal for hiddencloset.org.

What others say about me: I have nice Legs and that I have a lot of courage to transition from a man into a woman.

Anything else we absolutely must know about you: I have an open mind and I love learning new things that are of interest to me and I try them to see if I like them or not.

Julie’s T-Girl Day Out

It has been so long since we have had a girl’s get together…too long I think! So what we will have coming up for you on the 11th of April is a little pamper party! So throw on your favourite dress and come along for some pampering. We will be showing you hand and nail care so bring your favourite nail colour and some afternoon tea.
